Spinal vertebrae are connected by rounded tissues called intervertebral (or spinal) discs, which allow movement of the spine and provide protection against injuries. A herniation happens when the central portion of a disc moves toward the outer fibrous ring and bulges outwards. Initially, there may be a protrusion that is not considered a herniation until the central portion fully erupts. Spinal disc herniation can be caused by degeneration, spinal traumas, strains, injuries, or other health disorders. It typically occurs in the lumbar region of the spine, although the neck and middle region can also be affected. When a hernia pinches a nerve root, it may cause sharp pain, tingling, numbness, or impaired reflexes.
